Former East Bay standout Gaej Walker makes Doak Walker award watch list

Gaej Walker started his college career as a defensive back. About a year ago, the former East Bay standout switched positions, joining Western Kentucky’s offensive backfield.

On his first collegiate carry, Walker ran 68 yards for a touchdown. The yards — and the touchdowns — kept coming.

So did the accolades.

Now, Walker (featured photo above courtesy of Steve Roberts/WKU Athletics) is recognized as one of the nation’s best running backs. On Wednesday, the redshirt senior was named to the 2020 Doak Walker Award watch list. He is the only former player from the area to be selected as a preseason candidate for the award, which honors the nation’s top running back.

Last season, Walker ran for 1,208 yards and had a team-best eight rushing touchdowns. He rushed for more than 100 yards in seven games, tied for most in Conference USA.
