Plant’s Carrie Mahon named the Class 7A coach of the year

This was a memorable season for Plant girls basketball coach Carrie Mahon. The longtime girls basketball coach recorded her 500th career victory. Two of her players, Nya Jean and Kendal Cheesman, each surpassed 1,000 points in their careers.

And the Panthers advanced to the state semifinals for just the second time in school history and made their first-ever state championship appearance. The result was not what Mahon or her players wanted. Plant lost to Miami in the final.

Still, the special season was recognized.

Last week, Mahon was selected as the Class 7A state coach of the year. The winners in each classification were selected by a panel of high school girls basketball coaches and reporters.

Here is the voting went.

  • Carrie Mahon, Plant, 102 points
  • Sam Baumgarten, Miami Senior, 91 points
  • Freddie Clinton, Timber Creek, 49 points

In 18 seasons, Mahon has transformed the Panthers into consistent contenders. She has 387 victories at Plant.
