Megan Hughes, Mikal Willeke named to academic all-state team

The Florida High School Athletic Association announced the 24 student-athletes selections to the Florida Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Team. Two area seniors, Academy of the Holy Names’ Megan Hughes and Cambridge Christian’s Mikal Willeke, were each honored. 

As academic all-state honorees, Hughes and Willeke will each receive a $1,700 scholarship along with a collective medallion. From the 24 recipients, two Scholar-Athletes of the Year, one boy and one girl, will be announced later this year.

To qualify, student-athletes needed at least a 3.5 unweighted grade point average and to letter in two or more varsity sports as juniors and seniors.

Hughes holds a 4.0 GPA and currently ranks among the top of her class. She ran cross country and track and played basketball. The distance specialist still holds school records in the 5K, 400, 800 and 1600-meter races. 

Hughes also is the executive director of Cross-Out Cancer. She plans on studying business analytics at Notre Dame.

Willeke has a 4.0 GPA and is the valedictorian of his class. He played baseball, basketball and football. In addition, Willeke served as the National Honor Society president and was a Science Honor Society officer. He plans on studying engineering at Army.
