Tributes pour in for area athletes in spring sports

The decision was inevitable. With public and private schools remaining closed, spring sports had no wiggle room to squeeze in even an abbreviated postseason schedule.

For many teams, their season lasted just a handful of games in February and March. Football programs did not even get that. Their spring season was supposed to start April 27. Instead, it was all wiped away after the Florida High School Athletic Association announced Monday that all spring sports were cancelled.

Some programs already were prepared. Seminole’s track team held a “social distancing parade” nearly a month ago on the same night it was supposed to honor its seniors during a home meet.

On Monday, WDAE (95.3 FM and 620 AM) gave shoutouts to area senior athletes every 20 minutes past the hour.

Teams joined in on social media, posting photos and videos that paid tribute to its players who had their seasons cut short.
