Eight area players make all-state in girls basketball

The Tampa Bay area was well-represented on the all-state girls basketball teams put together by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC). In all, there were eight players from the area who made all-state in their respective classifications, including four first-team selections. 

Class 7A

Second team

Plant's Kendal Cheesman

F Kendal Cheesman, Jr., Plant

The Vanderbilt commit averaged 16.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game to help lead the Panthers to the state semifinals.

Class 6A

Third team

F Janiah Barker, So., Tampa Bay Tech

One of the nation’s top post players in the Class of 2022 averaged 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game before a season-ending injury just before the playoffs. 

G Alli Head, Sr., Pinellas Park

One of the area’s top scorers, Head averaged 29.6 points per game and led the Patriots to their first winning record (13-10) in more than a decade. 

G Megan Watson, Sr., Strawberry Crest

The Chargers’ top playmaker averaged 20.4 points per game and helped her team win a district title and reach the region semifinals.

Class 5A

First team

G I’ces Utegg, Sr., River Ridge

The Royal Knights’ go-to girl averaged 23.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and was a big reason her team entered the playoffs as a district champion.

Tarpon Springs' Anabel Ellison

G Anabel Ellison, Sr., Tarpon Springs

The Marist signee, who was Pinellas County’s top overall player, averaged 25.2 points,6 rebounds and 5.7 assists and led the Spongers to their third straight winning season.

Class 3A

First team

G Tarriyonna Gary, Sr., Carrollwood Day

The Towson signee played a pivotal role in the Patriots’ run to their first-ever state title by averaging 14.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Tampa Prep’s Kailyn Gilbert was named the Class 3A player of the year.

G Kailyn Gilbert, Sr., Tampa Prep

The  playmaker led the state and finished fifth nationally in scoring with an average of 32.1 points per game.
