Clearwater’s Max Jones commits to Tampa

Clearwater’s Max Jones ended his lengthy recruiting process by committing to the University of Tampa on Friday.

Jones was among just a handful of prominent local players from the Class of 2020 who had yet to make a college decision. He chose the Spartans over offers from several other Division II programs, such as Barry, Eckerd, Saint Leo and Southeastern.

As a senior, Jones was the Tornadoes’ go-to player, averaging 22 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He led the program to its second straight district title and its first region final appearance since 2010.

By taking Clearwater to new heights, Jones received plenty of accolades. He was a first-team all-state selection and was the runnerup for the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 5A state player of the year honors.

Jones will join a Tampa squad that already includes two locals on the roster, Kaleb Karnes (Berkeley Prep) and Gio Diez (Plant City).
