Alonso’s Sowande Walker commits to FIU

Alonso’s Sowande Walker has committed to Florida International’s track program. The senior will specialize in the discus for Panthers coach Ryan Herberling.

Walker, who recently graduated, is the Ravens’ record holder in the discus with a throw of 170 feet, 07 inches (51.84 meters) at a meet three months ago. That mark was tops among Tampa Bay area athletes in the event this year.

At last year’s state meet, Walker was a runnerup in the discus with a throw of 164 feet, 7 inches (50.01 meters). At FIU, Walker will work primarily with Herberling, who also coaches the program’s discus and shot put athletes.
