Lakewood’s latest star: Rod Wave

Lakewood is often referred to as “Hollywood High”, a moniker that stems from the constellation of star athletes that hail from the school.

But the biggest Spartan product these days was never a sports celebrity.

Still, Rod Wave has game — in the rap industry.

The Lakewood graduate, whose real name is Rodarius Marcell Green, has had a meteoric rise. His debut album, Ghetto Gospel, peaked at No. 10 on the US Billboard 200 when it was released in November of 2019. And his song, Heart on Ice, not only went viral on YouTube but also peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100

That was just the beginning.

In April, Rod Wave released his second album, Pray 4 Love, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200

He is now a fan favorite, particularly among athletes.

On Friday, he released the deluxe version of his Pray 4 Love album. That had local sports stars anxiously waiting as if it were Christmas.

Among the songs on the new version is Through the Wire, an ode to Kanye West’s 2004 debut single. Rod Wave wrote his after a near-fatal car accident last month. The video features the damaged 2020 Corvette Stingray from the accident.
