Makenzy Martin, Brooke Volpi are Alvarez honorees

Berkeley Prep’s Makenzy Martin and Robinson’s Brooke Volpi were named co-winners of the Janet Alvarez Award as the top girls soccer players in Hillsborough County.

The award presentation, now in its 36th year, typically is done during a dinner ceremony. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the two winners were either awarded at school or their team banquet.

Martin finished with 17 goals and seven assists to help the Buccaneers reach the Class 3A region final.

In the playoffs, Martin delivered, scoring and tying and winning goals in the region quarterfinals, a tying goal that forced overtime and eventually penalty kicks in the quarterfinals and another with just five minutes left to send the region final to penalty kicks.
