Prime time teams

Clearwater (1-1): After an opening week loss to Jesuit, the Tornadoes needed to find a way to regroup. They did it in a big way, rallying in the fourth quarter to beat Largo 20-17. It is the first time Clearwater has beaten its rival since 2016, snapping a three-game losing streak in the series.

Mitchell (1-0): The Mustangs avenged their only district loss in an emphatic way, routing Pinellas Park 42-12 in the season opener. Andy Treto ran hard. Johnny Fairbank played well on both sides of the ball. And Khamari Smith picked off a pass.

Clearwater Central Catholic (1-1): The inexperience showed in a season-opening loss to rival Tampa Catholic a week ago. But the Marauders grew up, responding from that setback by rallying to beat Wiregrass Ranch 14-7.

Prime time performers

QB Kamrhen Simpkins, Sr., Clearwater: The transfer from Countryside threw for 136 yards, ran 64 more and accounted for two touchdowns, the biggest coming late in the fourth quarter to help the Tornadoes complete the comeback in a 20-17 win over Largo.

QB Brandon Marcsisin, Jr., Calvary Christian: The first-year starter threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first half as the Warriors jumped out to a big lead then held on to beat Seffner Chriistian 17-7.

RB Lenwood Sapp, So., Clearwater Central Catholic: One of the Marauders newcomers in the lineup delivered in the clutch, scoring on a 3-yard run in the final minute of regulation for what turned out to be the winning score in a 14-7 victory over Wiregrass Ranch.
