Tuesday’s sports schedule

Check it out

Steinbrenner at Plant, 7

The Panthers won both meetings last year, including the Class 7A region final. The Warriors got some measure of revenge by knocking off Plant in last week’s Berkeley Premier. That sets the stage for the latest installment in this rivalry.

Berkeley Prep at Tampa Prep, 6

What used to be the area’s premier rivalry has been lopsided in recent years. The Buccaneers have won the past nine meetings, a streak that dates back to 2014. But the Terrapins have shown improvement this season and could make this one competitive.

Osceola at Clearwater Central Catholic, 6

A solid matchup between area teams each ranked among the top 30 in the state (Osceola No. 30 and CCC No. 10) according to MaxPreps.

East Lake at Tarpon Springs, 7

North Pinellas County rivals square off in what has been one of the area’s most competitive series. The teams have split their past four meetings.

Carrollwood Day at Academy of the Holy Names, 6:30

A meeting between two state title contenders. The Patriots, who made the Class 3A region quarterfinals last season, are off to a 7-1 start. They face the defending Class 4A state semifinalist Jaguars.

The Hillsborough County Football Player of the Week

LB/S Cole Highsmith, Jr., Plant City

After becoming a starter as a sophomore last season, Cole Highsmith took on a more prominent role as one of the leaders of Plant City’s defense.

He took on that task by making play after play.

This season, Highsmith has recorded 73 tackles and six sacks. Those totals already surpassed what he ended up with last year.

Against Bloomingdale two weeks ago, Highsmith had 13 tackles, two sacks and an interception to lead the Raiders to victory.

Fans paid attention. Highsmith received 50 percent of the votes (746) in the Hillsborough County football player of the week poll to beat out Wharton’s Daveon Crouch, who had 25 percent (376 votes).
