The PTP volleyball players of the week

PTP pick

OH Kate Youmans, Sr., St. Petersburg

A four-year varsity member, Kate Youmans has steadily improved as her role increased.

Now a senior, Youmans does more than just compile impressive statistics. She is one of five captains and provides leadership on a roster that includes 17 underclassmen.

The Green Devils main offensive weapon has recorded double digits in kills in each of the last three matches, all three-game sweeps..

Against Sunlake in last week’s Class 6A region quarterfinals, Youmans was not limited to spiking the ball on the other side of the net. Sure, she finished with 12 kills and now has 604 in her career. But she also had three digs and won 12 of 18 points with her serves, including four aces. That was more than enough to lead St. Petersburg to the region semifinals.

The fans’ pick

S Faith Jetter, So., Fivay

A year ago, Faith Jetter spent matches sending the volleyball forcefully on the opposing side to record kill after kill.

Now, she sets up her teammates to do the same.

The sophomore went through a position change, becoming the Falcons’ setter this season. She adapted well, recording a whopping 530 assists, which ranks sixth among players in the Tampa Bay area.

Last week, Jetter had 32 assists in a three-game sweep over Pasco in the Class 5A region quarterfinals.

Fans were impressed. Jetter had more than 39 percent of the votes (10, 185) to beat out St. Petersburg’s Kate Youmans, who had more than 38 percent (9,841).
