The PTP defensive players of the week

PTP pick

DL Tawfiq Thomas, Jr., Gaither

Cowboys coaches insist that Tawiq Thomas has among the best hands on the team.

Usually, those hands are used to ward off offensive linemen before wrapping them around opposing ball carriers and quarterbacks.

Thomas did plenty of that in an anticipated matchup against Armwood. He caused havoc in the Hawks’ backfield, registering three tackles and a sack.

But he also snagged two interceptions, the first ones of his high school career. The last one came late in the fourth quarter that sealed a 17-10 win.

The fans’ pick

DB Tyler Corish, Sr., Jesuit

Tyler Corish has a knack for picking off passes. He has a team-leading four interceptions this season.

He also has a propensity for finding the end zone whenever he takes the ball from opposing quarterbacks. Of his four interceptions, three have gone for touchdowns this season.

Against Gibbs, he took two of them back for scores, both in the first half of a 69-6 rout that kept the Tigers’ perfect record (8-0) intact.

That was more than enough to win over fans. Corish received 46 percent of the vote (9,722) to beat out Plant City’s Todd Miller, who had 30 percent (6,384).
