The PTP defensive players of the week

The PTP pick

DL Mario Eugenio, Jr., Gaither

As an edge rusher, Mario Eugenio has a knack for flying past linemen to bring down opposing quarterbacks.

He made a name for himself as a sophomore last season when he finished with 81 tackles and 13 sacks. Four times in 2019 Eugenio recorded multiple sacks in games.

The trend continued this season. Eugenio had at least one sack in every game and registered two or more in three of them heading into the regular season finale.

Against Freedom, he kept applying the pressure.

It worked. Eugenio took down the quarterback again. And again.

He finished with a career high six sacks to lead the Cowboys in rout that sealed the first undefeated regular season in school history.

The fans’ pick

LB Cole Highsmith, So., Plant City

This has been a painful season at times for Cole Highsmith. An injury sidelined the Raiders linebacker for four games.

Cleared to resume playing last month, Highsmith wasted no time making an impact.

Against Durant, he had a season-high 14 tackles and recorded the first three sacks of his high school to help Plant City hold on to the Redman Cup with a win over its rival.

Highsmith won over fans with that performance. He received more than 39 percent of the votes (931) to beat out East Lake’s TJ Handsel, who had more than 39 percent (703 votes).
