Tampa Prep’s Joe Fenlon reaches 800 wins

Tampa Prep’s Joe Fenlon already has more wins in the state than any other boys basketball coach.

On Saturday, he added to that total by reaching a remarkable milestone: 800 wins.

There was not much buildup to the occasion. Because of COVID-19 safety protocols, students spend most of their time learning virtually and attend classes on campus just two days a week.

There were no fans, either.

General admission was forbidden, so supporters who watched this landmark win against King did so via livestream.

By the second half, the milestone was a forgone conclusion. The Terrapins (11-8) turned a tight game into a rout, cruising to a 64-34 victory.

Fenlon said this was one of his favorite teams and wanted to get that memorable number because it would give them something positive to build on heading into the district tournament in two weeks.

Now, after a season of anticipation, win No. 800 is now complete.

Family, faculty, friends and former players were well-prepared. They put together a 25-minute video on YouTube paying homage to the beloved coach.
