The PTP girls basketball players of the week

The fans’ pick

G Tyra Kennedy, So., Hillsborough

Hillsborough has gone through a remarkable transformation. After winning just two games during the 2018-19 season, the Terriers improved to 11-10 last season.

The momentum — and the success — has continued.

This season, Hillsborough is 16-8 and enters this week’s Class 6A, District 8 tournament as the No. 2 seed.

The turnaround coincides with the arrival of Tyra Kennedy last season.

As a freshman a year ago, Kennedy averaged 14 points per game. This season, her production has increased. Entering the district tournament, she is averaging a team-leading 15.7 points per game.

Better still, Kennedy is playing her best basketball at the right time.

Two weeks ago, she averaged 27 points, eight rebounds and eight steals per game in wins over Leto and Alonso.

Fans thought highly of her performance. Kennedy received more than 86 percent of the votes (442) to beat out Plant’s Nyla Jean, who had more than seven percent (38 votes).

The PTP picks

G Beckham Hockley, Fr., Clearwater: Averaged 14 points in three wins, including a victory over Lakewood to claim the PCAC title for the second straight season.

G Nyla Jean, Sr., Plant: Averaged 24 points, five steals and four assists per game in wins over Tampa Bay Tech and Armwood.
