The PTP softball players of the week

The fans’ pick

C/1B Hannah Church, Jr., Berkeley Prep

In an abbreviated nine-game schedule last season, Hannah Church put up solid numbers at the plate, batting .552 with 18 RBIs.

The only thing lacking was power. She hit one home run.

Church showed off plenty of pop to start this season. In her first two games, she hit a combined three homers and four RBIs. But she was not just swinging for the fences. Church went a combined 6-for-8 in those games to help the Buccaneers beat Tarpon Springs 4-0 and Seffner Christian 14-4.

Her early season has continued. Church currently is batting .625 with four homers and seven RBIs. Those numbers are a big reason Berkeley Prep has started the season 5-0.

Fans were impressed. Church received more than 49 percent of the votes (1,811) to beat out Newsome’s Kelsey Winters, who had more than 34 percent (1,261 votes).

The PTP picks

P Emily Proctor, Sr., Land O’ Lakes: Has yet to allow a run in 11 innings of work and has recorded a combined 17 strikeouts to help the Gators beat Wiregrass Ranch and Academy of the Holy Names to open the season.

P/1B Kelsey Winters, Jr., Newsome: Allowed one run and struck out a combined 25 batters in wins over Wharton and Bloomingdale.
