The PTP baseball players of the week

The fans’ pick

INF/C Johnathan Bruno, Sr., Berkeley Prep

A four-year player on varsity, Johnathan Bruno has always had a prominent role. He has played in every game for the Buccaneers since he was a freshman.

Bruno (featured photo above courtesy of Jim English) has made steady progress, too.

As a junior last season, Bruno was off to the best start of his high school career. He was hitting .421 with five RBIs before the season ended after eight games because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The momentum has carried over to this season. Bruno currently leads the team in batting average (.469), hits (15) and is second in RBIs (seven).

Last week,  he was a combined 5-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored in wins over Tampa Prep and Clearwater Central Catholic.

Fans were impressed. Bruno received 88 percent of the votes (288) to beat out East Lake’s Marco Dinges, who had more than six percent (21 votes).

The PTP picks

C/1B/2B Marco Dinges, Sr., East Lake: Went a combined 8-for-12 with three doubles and two doubles to help the Eagles beat Wiregrass Ranch twice and knock off Sunlake.

P/UTIL Colby Fanning, Sr., Strawberry Crest: Went a combined 6-for-11 with a double and three RBIs and threw a combined eight innings, allowing six hits and striking out eight in wins over Armwood, Plant City and Plant.
