The PTP softball players of the week

The fans’ pick

C/3B/SS Jalyn Sharkey, Fr., East Lake

Jalyn Sharkey’s arrival at East Lake has given the program a powerful bat in the lineup.

How powerful?

The freshman has 10 home runs this season, the same number the rest of the team has hit combined. Sharkey’s total is tied with two others for the eighth-most in the state this season.

That is not all. The slugger also ranks second on the team in batting average (.514) and RBIs (38).

Two weeks ago, Sharkey had a memorable performance, going 3-for-4 with two homers, eight RBIs and four runs scored in a win over Pinellas Park.

Fans were impressed. Sharkey received 49 percent of the votes (4,662) to beat Nature Coast’s Tori Ratigan, who had 30 percent (2,878 votes).

The PTP pick

SS Tori Ratigan, Sr., Nature Coast: Finished a combined 13-of-16 in four games, all wins, to set the single-season school record for hits with 49.

CF Jordan Stephens, Sr., Robinson: In five games, the Alabama signee was a combined 10-of-16 with three doubles, a triple, a homer and seven RBIs to help the Knights finish as the runnerup at the Naples Longshore Tournament.
