Class 2A

2021 Flag Football Championship Tournament 2A Championship Tournament

The matchups

Alonso (16-1) at Newsome (16-1), 7

It does not get any better than this. Both teams are ranked among the top three in 2A, the top five in the state and the top six in the nation according to MaxPreps. The Ravens posted four straight shutouts before allowing 13 points in a 2A-7 district final win over Steinbrenner. That victory exacted revenge for Alonso’s only loss this season. Sadie and Ella Bode are fierce pass rushers who have combined for 35 of the Ravens’ 38 sacks this season. Newsome’s only loss this season was by four points to powerhouse Robinson three weeks ago. The Wolves rebounded to win their last three to take the 2A-8 district title. Quarterback Devyn Silvestri has accounted for 54 touchdowns this season (44 passing, 10 rushing). On defense, Newsome is led by Caroline Mckenna, who has 40 sacks.

Orlando Dr. Phillips (10-5) at Bloomingdale (9-6), 7

The host Bulls were 6-6 entering the 2A-6 district tournament, then won three straight to take the title. They did with a stingy defense and opportunistic offense that helped them pull through in a series of low-scoring games. The Panthers also got hot at the right time, winning their last four by a combined 92-6.

Class 1A

2021 Flag Football Championship Tournament 1A Championship Tournament

The matchups

Lecanto (13-1) at Chamberlain (10-2), 7

Chamberlain, winners of five straight, knocked off Brooks DeBartolo 13-6 in the semifinals and Clearwater 14-12 in the final to take the 1A-10 district. To move on in the playoffs, Chamberlain will have to get past Lecanto, which is ranked 18th in the nation by MaxPreps and has won its last four games by a combined 100-6.

Robinson (18-0) at Bradenton Southeast (12-0), 7

Robinson, ranked No. 2 in the nation by MaxPreps, has been dominant, outscoring foes by a combined 730-50 this season. Quarterback Sydney Stout has put up some eye-popping stats, throwing for 4,762 yards and a single-season state record 90 touchdowns. Adriana Williams, who spent time in the offseason breaking down film with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Shaq Barrett, put that knowledge to use by recording 19 sacks this season. Bradenton Southeast is ranked 10th in 1A and has allowed just 44 points all season.

Flag football: Casey Contreras named top player in Hillsborough

Steinbrenner’s Casey Contreras had a knack for picking off opposing passers, so much that she was recognized as the top flag football player in Hillsborough County.

The senior took home the Happy Home Goods Outstanding Flag Football Award in large part for recording a county record 40 interceptions in her career. It is the first time the Warriors had a player win the award.

Contreras contributed in other ways, too. She served as a team mentor, particularly on the academic side. Her help is a big reason Steinbrenner is the four-time defending Class 2A academic state champions, an honor awarded to the team with the highest combined GPA.

Her leadership, loyalty and compassion played a role in a season filled with honors.

In January, Contreras was the female winner of the Bill Minahan award, given annually to two student athletes who excel on and off the field.

Robinson quarterback Sydney Stout, who rewrote the record book as a passer while leading the program to its fifth straight state title, was named Miss Flag Football, the award given to the top overall player in the state by the Florida Dairy Farmers.

After missing last season because of the coronavirus pandemic, the senior took over as the Knights’ starter this season and shattered the state records for yards (5,086), touchdown passes (111) and completion percentage (74).

That prolific passing attack was a big reason Robinson went 22-0, outscoring foes by a combined 876-65 en route to their fifth straight state title in Class 1A and sixth overall.

Stout beat out Newsome quarterback/defensive back Devyn Silvestri for the top honor. Silvestri, who led the Wolves to their first state title, was named the 2A player of the year. Newsome’s Justin Shive was named the top overall coach in the state.
