Former Bucs lineman George Johnson takes over at Cambridge

Cambridge Christian moved quickly to name a new football coach, hiring former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end George Johnson to take over the program.

The school made the announcement via Twitter on Tuesday. Johnson replaces Chad Walker, who left after one season to become the coach at the Christ School in Arden, N.C.

Johnson, a former standout at Rutgers, signed with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He spent three seasons in Tampa Bay in his first stint before returning for the 2015 and ‘16 seasons. During an eight-year NFL career, Johnson recorded 66 tackles and eight sacks.

Johnson stayed in the area after his career ended to train prospects for the NFL combine. Last season, he served as the Lancers’ defensive coordinator.

The program Johnson inherits is a talented one that is coming off a 9-2 season and a trip to the 2A region semifinals.
