Outlook

The series was close in 2017-18 with the Spartans winning each of those games by a point. Since then, Lakewood has dominated, beating its rival by 30 or more points in each of the last two seasons. Once again, the Spartans are loaded with playmakers. Amari Niblack (Alabama) and Terrell Crosby (Toledo) are college-bound prospects who headline a talented receiving corps. Quarterback Anthony Colandrea, who has an offer from Kentucky, among others, transferred from Clearwater Central Catholic. In the spring, Colandrea threw for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns and followed that up by throwing for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s jamboree. The Pirates went through a coaching change in the offseason. Matthew Gudorf, a defensive coordinator at the school, was promoted to take over the program. He replaced Max Smith, who left and now is the offensive coordinator at Pinellas Park. Boca Ciega had to replace quarterback Taffrey Peterman and running back Chris Phillips, both of whom graduated. There still is talent on offense. Connor Dugan has taken over at quarterback and played well in leading the Pirates to wins over Gulf and Mitchell in last week’s jamboree. MJ Harrell, who returned an interception for a touchdown against the Mustangs a week ago, is among the leaders on defense for Boca Ciega.

Joe Pinkos’ pick: Lakewood by 4

Putnam’s prediction: Lakewood 21-20
