Top five games

1. Jesuit 24, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 21

The Tigers scored in the final nine seconds to beat the defending national champions. The victory over a powerhouse program gives Jesuit confidence that it can not only compete with teams from Fort Lauderdale or Miami but also beat them. That will be a huge bonus come playoff time for a team with legitimate state title aspirations.

2. Hillsborough 20, Armwood 14

What a difference a year makes. Last season, the Terriers lost 56-10 in the season opener against the Hawks. This time, Hillsborough prevailed thanks to a fourth down midfield bomb from Caleb Pierce with 1:30 remaining and a last-second defensive stand.

3. Bloomingdale 16, Newsome 10 (OT)

After losing to Gaither in the season opener, the Bulls needed to rebound. They did just that, rallying from a 10-7 fourth quarter deficit to tie the game, then win it in overtime.

4. Berkeley Prep 28, Calvary Christian 26

Ahead 28-13 with about five minutes remaining, the Buccaneers had to hold off a furious Warriors rally. The outcome was not decided until Berkeley Prep stopped a 2-point conversion with 15 seconds left that would have tied the game.

5. Clearwater 35, East Lake 28

In a back-and-forth contest, the Tornadoes scored two third quarter touchdowns that gave them enough of a cushion to get their first win of the season.
