The volleyball player of the week

L Sophia Kotsovolos, Sr., Plant

A defensive wizard, Sophia Kostovolos makes sure the volleyball never touches the court whenever the opposing offense is on the attack.

Digs are her thing. Just check the stats.

Last season, Kotsovolos’ first at Plant, she racked up the digs, so much so she finished the season with 374, which ranked among the top 25 in the state.

The digs kept adding up this season — enough for Kotsovolos to reach a major milestone. Last week, she recorded the 1,000th of her career. Her ability to keep the ball in play also is a big reason the Panthers are currently ranked 12th nationally and second overall in the state by MaxPreps.

Fans were impressed. Kotsovolos received more than 51 percent of the votes (3,191) in the volleyball player of the week poll to beat out Berkeley Prep’s Ava Swain, who had 36 percent (2,216).
