Football player of the week

QB Anthony Colandrea, Jr., Lakewood

Entering this season, Anthony Colandrea threw for a combined 922 yards in his career.

He has already surpassed those totals in his first five games this season.

The numbers: 1,465 yards and 17 touchdowns.

If Colandrea keeps that pace, he could end up setting numerous single-season passing records in Pinellas County. The yards and touchdowns should keep piling up considering the talent around him.

After all, the receiving corps includes a pair of Division I-A recruits — Terrell Crosby (Toledo) and Amari Niblack (Alabama).

By taking advantage of those weapons, Colandrea had a memorable performance last week, throwing for 403 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Lakeland Kathleen that kept the Spartans (5-0) perfect this season.

Fans took notice. Colandrea received more than 80 percent of the votes (6,292) in the football player of the week poll to beat out St. Petersburg Catholic’s Sean Cuono, who had eight percent (624 votes).
