Football: Hernando County Top Three

1. Hernando (4-3)

Up next: Tonight vs. Sunlake

The Leopards appear to have a playoff berth secured. They are currently fourth in Class 4A, Region 2 based on the Florida High School Athletic Association’s latest RPI rankings. The next week is busy with Hernando playing three games in a six-day span. After hosting Sunlake tonight, the Leopards play Wiregrass Ranch on Tuesday in a makeup game from earlier this season and finish with a matchup against Lecanto on Nov. 5.

2. Nature Coast (5-3)

Up next: Friday vs. Weeki Wachee

The Sharks have been battling injuries, particularly with their receivers and their secondary. Last week’s loss to Zephyrhills dropped Nature Coast to third place in Class 5A, District 9 and out of contention for a title. Still, the Sharks are in good position to make the playoffs with an at-large bid. They are currently third in their region based on the latest RPI rankings.

3. Springstead (6-3)

Up next: Friday vs. Ocala Vanguard

The Eagles, who are coming off a bye, close out the regular season with a matchup against Ocala Vanguard that will decide the Class 6A, District 5 title. A Springstead win could force a three-way tie with Vanguard and Belleview at the top of the standings. The winner would then be determined by which team has the highest RPI ranking. Vanguard currently has the top ranking in the region.
