Boys basketball: Boca Ciega to name court after former coach Randy Shuman

Former Boca Ciega boys basketball coach Randy Shuman, who won 601 games and led the program to a state title during his 31-year tenure, will have the court named in his honor tonight.

The ceremony is at 5:30 p,m, before the start of the Pirates’ junior varsity game.

Shuman started his coaching career in West Virginia before taking over at Boca Ciega during the 1989-90 season. In 1994, he led the Pirates to their second state title in school history.

Boca Ciega’s first state title was in 1986 under Kenneth Robinson. The gymnasium is named after him.

Shuman, who replaced Robinson, had one of the area’s most successful careers. Last season, Shuman reached the 600-win plateau. At the time, he was one of only four active coaches to hit the mark, joining Tampa Catholic’s Don Dziagwa, Jesuit’s Neal Goldman and Tampa Prep’s Joe Fenlon.
