Class 4A state semifinals
Lakewood (10-2) at Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (9-2), 7:30
A matchup between two of the top five teams in the class according to MaxPreps (the Spartans are No. 5 and the Chiefs are No. 2). Lakewood is in the state semifinals for the second time in the past three seasons and the third time overall under coach Cory Moore. Heading into the final two games of the regular season, the Spartans were undefeated. They had their 27-game regular season streak end with losses to Hollywood Chaminade and Lakeland. Despite the results, the outcomes had some positives by preparing Lakewood for the type of competition it would face in the playoffs, especially traveling to Hollywood to face Chaminade, which has advanced to the state final each of the past five seasons and won three straight titles (2017-19). Now, the Spartans know what to expect with a road game in Fort Lauderdale to face defending 4A state champion Cardinal Gibbons. Lakewood has a potent passing game with quarterback Anthony Colandrea (32 touchdown passes) and receivers Amari Niblack (Alabama) and Terrell Crosby (Toledo), both of whom are Division I-A recruits. The Spartans also have some balance with the return of running back Montrevious Lloyd, who rushed for than 80 yards in last week’s win over Clewiston. There are playmakers on the defensive side, too, led by Crosby, who has a state-leading 14 interceptions. Cardinal Gibbons’ two losses this season were to Plantation American Heritage (23-20) and to Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (39-14). The Chiefs’ biggest win of the season came last week when they beat Miami Gulliver Prep 36-33 in the region final.
