Football player of the week — State finals (Dec. 10-18)

QB Luke Knight, So., Jesuit

Heading into the season, Luke Knight had the enviable task of replacing Joe Pesansky, one of the state’s most prolific passers last season.

Knight shined as a first-year starter, leading Jesuit to an undefeated season and berth in the 6A state championship.

And in the final, Knight delivered when his team needed him most.

Trailing by 15 in the second half, Knight led the Tigers on a furious rally, throwing for 347 yards and three touchdowns, the last coming with 37 seconds that proved to be the game-winner in a 35-29 victory over Pensacola Pine Forest.

It was the first state football title for Jesuit since 1968.

Fans approved of that performance. Knight had 53 percent of the votes (59) in the football player of the week poll from the state finals to beat out teammate Junior Vandeross, who had 16 percent (18 votes).
