Wednesday sports schedule — Jan. 12

What to watch

Boys basketball

Seminole (12-4) at Clearwater (7-5), 7:30

The winner takes sole possession of first place in Class 5A, District 9. The Warhawks are coming off a win over Countryside last week. The host Tornadoes have won four straight, the last three all by double digits.

Boys soccer

Wharton (5-2-2) at Steinbrenner (9-1-2), 6

After starting 2-2-2, the Wildcats have won three straight, outscoring foes by a combined 21-1 during their streak. The competition will be more difficult against Warriors, who have won five straight by a combined score of 39-1.

Girls basketball

Plant (11-4) at Steinbrenner (12-5), 6:30

The Panthers, ranked No. 9 in Class 7A by MaxPreps, have won three straight. The Warriors are coming off a tough 52-50 win over Lennard on Tuesday that extended their win streak to four.

Lennard (13-6) at Bloomingdale (14-3), 6:30

The Longhorns are trying to get back on track after losing three of their last four games. That will not be easy against the Bulls, who have the top seed in Class 6A, Region 3 based on RPI rankings.

Newsome (11-5) at East Bay (13-6), 6:30

The Wolves snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over Riverview on Tuesday. The Indians have won two straight, including a big victory over Lennard last week.

Girls soccer

East Lake (8-1-2) at Sickles (12-2-3), 7

The Eagles, despite a stellar record, are currently holding the eighth and final playoff seed in Class 7A, Region 2 based on RPI rankings. A win would help them move up. But that will be tough against the Gryphons, who are seeded fourth in the same region.
