Friday sports schedule — Jan. 14

What to watch

Boys basketball

Wharton (15-1) at Plant (14-3), 7

The Wildcats have won 14 straight, 11 by double digits. The host Panthers have put together an impressive streak, too, winning eight straight.

St. Petersburg (12-3) at East Lake (11-6), 7:30

This is the only meeting in the regular season between the rivals. It also could serve as a preview of the Pinellas County Athletic Championship game in a few weeks.

Tampa Catholic (9-8) at Jesuit (15-2), 7:30

The rivalry game has already sold out. Despite just hovering above .500, the Crusaders come in battle-tested thanks to a grueling schedule against some of the best teams in the nation. The defending 5A state semifinalist Tigers are on a four-game win streak, all by double digits.

Winthrop College Prep (17-2) at Zephyrhills (13-1), 7:30

Solid cross-county, private vs. public matchup between teams that are a combined 30-3 so far this season.

Boys soccer

Plant (13-3-1) at Bloomingdale (7-3-1), 8

The Panthers are coming off a 4-1 win over Robinson on Tuesday. The host Bulls snapped a two-match losing streak with a 1-0 win over East Bay.

Riverview (8-3) at Gaither (9-2-1), 8

The Sharks are 3-1 in their last four matches, the lone loss coming by a goal against Newsome during that stretch. The Cowboys, meanwhile, have won three straight.

Girls basketball

MLK Classic at Lakewood

The two-day tournament features the three area teams that made the state semifinals last season – Brooks DeBartolo, Clearwater and Plant – as well as the host Spartans. Here is tonight’s schedule

Ridge Community vs. Sarasota, 4:30

Clearwater vs. Plant, 6

Lakewood vs. Bradenton Southeast, 7:30

Brooks DeBartolo vs. Winter Haven, 9

Girls soccer

Newsome (10-3-2) at Sickles (12-2-4), 6

The Wolves have won four straight, all via shutouts. The Gryphons are 4-0-2 in their last six matches. Their two losses were each by a goal.

Plant (12-2) at Bloomingdale (6-3-3), 6

The Panthers, winners of eight straight, put their streak on the line against the host Bulls, who have won their past two by a combined 13-0.
