Premier college coaches muscle up in Jesuit’s weight room

Jesuit’s Oliva Weight Room, a roughly 2,000 square foot building that was refurbished in the past year, has become the epicenter for coaches of some of the most renowned college programs to hold impromptu workouts.

Last week, Michigan’s Jim Harbuagh visited the school on a recruiting trip and decided to do a set of squats. He did 16 of them – in loafers and khaki pants.

On Thursday, it was Brent Venables turn.

Without any prodding, the Oklahoma coach did 10 neutral-grip pull-ups.

“He didn’t even know that Harbaugh did squats while he was in here,” Jesuit coach Matt Thompson said of Venables. “At least that’s what (Venables) said.”

Both coaches were there recruiting Troy Bowles, a junior linebacker who is the son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. They were also checking out other prospects the 6A state champion Tigers have in the 2023 and ‘24 classes.

Plenty of other coaches have stopped by, including Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Florida State’s Mike Norvell. But only Harbuagh and Venables held their own workout sessions.

“I don’t know if they were bored or what,” Thompson said. “But it is pretty cool.”
