Hillsborough County girls basketball player of the week — Jan. 17-22

F/G Miani Mejia, Jr., Durant

With an 18-4 record heading into the district tournament, Durant is having one of its best seasons in school history.

Miani Mejia is a big reason for the Cougars’ success.

The junior is averaging 14.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. During a four-game stretch from Jan. 11-18 she averaged 25 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

Her best performance came two weeks ago against Riverview. Mejia nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals to lead the way in a victory over the Sharks.

Fans paid attention. Mejia had 47 percent of the votes (788) in the Hillsborough County girls basketball player of the week poll to beat out Academy of the Holy Names’ Gabrielle Morrison, who had 40 percent (671 votes).
