Bull run

A Hillsborough County team has won a girls basketball state title each of the last three years.

This week, Bloomingdale will take the first step to keep that streak intact.

The Bulls are in the state semifinals for the first time. They face Wekiva on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Lakeland’s RP Funding Center. Both teams are ranked among the top 10 in their class by MaxPreps (the Bulls are No. 9 and the Mustangs are No. 2).

Tampa Prep, Plant ‘play for boys soccer titles

Last week, there were five area still alive in the state semifinals.

Now, there are local programs left competing for titles.

Tampa Prep, ranked No. 1 in the nation, faces Miami Ransom Everglades in Thursday’s Class 3A state championship match at 1:05 p.m. at Deland’s Spec Martin Stadium. It is a battle between the two of the top three teams in the nation.

Two days later, Plant plays Cypress Bay in Saturday’s 7A final at 4:05 p.m. at Deland’s Spec Martin Stadium. Both teams are ranked among the top five in their classification by MaxPreps (the Panthers are No. 5 and the Lightning are No. 1). This is Plant’s second straight state final appearance. The Panthers lost 1-0 in overtime to Naples Gulf Coast in last year’s title match.

Shorecrest secures state title trip in girls soccer

Shorecrest, which made the state final in 2020, is the lone area team competing for a state title.

The Chargers play St. John Country Day in Wednesday’s 3A final at 7:05 p.m. at Deland’s Spec Martin Stadium. It is not a rematch of the 2020 final but also a matchup between the top two teams in the class by MaxPreps (the Chargers are No. 2 and the Spartans are No. 1)
