Teams that helped themselves

Central: After going winless last season, the Bears spent the offseason boosting their numbers. The depth paid off with a win over North Port.

Seminole: Auggie Sanchez, a former standout linebacker at Northeast and USF, was hired in the summer to take over the Warhawks. He had to scramble to field a staff and raise money. On Friday, his team took a positive step with a win over Brandon.

Pasco: First-year coach Alphonso Freeney has created a new vibe. It started in the spring and carried over with the Pirates rallying to beat River Ridge on Friday. Thar momentum goes a long way in helping Pasco rebound from going winless last season.

Middleton: The Tigers have always had playmakers. They put them to good use against defending region semifinalist Gibbs. Throughout the first half, Middleton stayed within striking distance, then rallied late to win. Sure, the reserves helped with the comeback, the Tigers now they can compete with playoff contenders.

Tarpon Springs: The Spongers decided to go independent under first-year coach Jeremy Frioud, a former standout at the school who returned to take over his alma mater. They made the decision to boost numbers enough to field a junior varsity team. On Friday, they also boosted morale by beating Cornerstone Christian Academy.

DL Antonio Camon, Sr., Tampa Bay Tech: The Pittsburgh commit recorded three sacks in a win over Sarasota Riverview.

ATH Parkees Harris Jr., Jr., Tarpon Springs: The Spongers’ new featured back put on a show in the first half, rushing for 137 yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries in a win over Cornerstone Charter.
