Successful debuts

Four first-year coaches – Anclote’s Greg Climan, Land O’ Lakes’ Dan Goodspeed, Pasco’s Alphonso Freeney and Sunlake’s Allen Suber II — all won their season openers. 

Steak snapped

Pasco’s resounding 33-13 win over East Ridge snapped the program’s nine-game losing streak, a stretch that dated back to the end of the 2020 season. 

De-fense! De-fense!

The biggest focus for Hudson this offseason was on defense. With good reason. Last season, the Cobras allowed more than 30 points per game. On Friday, the attention to that side of the ball was noticeable. Hudson beat Hernando 26-0 in the season opener, marking the Cobras second shutout since 2017. 

Prime time performers

RB Malachi Askin, Jr., Cypress Creek: Ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries and a two-point conversion in a win over Fivay. 

RB Tayshaun Balmir, Sr., Pasco: Ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in a win over East Ridge. He also had a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and scored on defense. 

QB Riley Blevins, Jr., Hudson: Threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Hernando.

CB Bradin Gadouas, Fr., Fivay: Finished with two interceptions and a forced fumble in a loss to Cypress Creek.

RB Cody Gwinn, Jr., Land O’ Lakes: Ran for 168 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries in a win over River Ridge.

LB Logan Falk, Sr., Cypress Creek: Recorded 15 tackles and 3 ½ sacks in a win over Fivay.

QB Chris Ferrini, Sr., Mitchell: Threw for 187 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Gulf.  

RB Kishaun Madden, Sr., Anclote: Had 107 yards of offense (85 rushing, 22 receiving) and two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) in a win over Bronson.

DB Jake Malvar, Jr., Mitchell: Recorded four tackles, had a forced fumble and recovered another in a win over Gulf.

LB Kevin Marks, Sr., Land O’ Lakes: Finished with 13 tackles and two sacks in a win over River Ridge.

RB Jamarion Miller, Jr., Mitchell: Ran for 62 yards and two touchdowns on four carries in a win over Gulf. 

DE Anthony Pratt, Sr., Pasco: Recorded nine tackles and two sacks in a win over East Ridge.

RB/LB Logan Shawell, Jr., Hudson: Rushed for 88 yards on 10 carries on offense and had five tackles and a forced fumble on defense in a win over Hudson.

WR Drayk Simmons, Sr., Mitchell: Ended up with four receptions for 132 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Gulf.
