Football: Thursday night forecast — Sept. 1

The second week of the season kicks off with three games tonight. Check out the outlooks on each one, as well as my prediction.

Cypress Creek (1-0) at Sunlake (1-0), 7

Both teams got off to great starts in their openers. The Coyotes held on for a 20-13 win over Sunlake. Malachi Askin ran for 217 yards and two touchdowns to lead Cypress Creek. Meanwhile, the host Seahawks cruised to a 26-7 win over Wesley Chapel last week. Tyler Smith had six catches for 137 yards and a touchdown for Sunlake. If the Seahawks win, they will already their win total from last season.

Putnam’s pick: Sunlake 20-16

Hollins (0-1) at Land O’ Lakes (1-0), 7:30

The Royals are trying to rebound after a 47-0 loss to Green Mountain (Co.) in the opener. It will not be easy. The host Gators were dominant last week, beating River Ridge 34-0. The biggest task on defense for Hollins is stopping Land O’ Lakes running back Cody Gwinn, who had 168 yards and three touchdowns in the opener.

Putnam’s pick: Land O’ Lakes 27-14

Countryside (1-0) at River Ridge (0-1), 7:30

This is a rematch from last years meeting that the Cougars won 36-28. Down 28-16 at the half , Countryside rallied in that game by outscoring the Royal Knights 20-0 in the second half. Last week, the Cougars got off to a great start with a 24-7 win over Dunedin. The running game racked up 337 yards, including 201 by Jaden Sanders. For the host Royal Knights, they are still trying to win their first game. To do that, they have to get their offense in gear after getting shutout against Land O’ Lakes last week.

Putnam’s pick: Countryside 28-13
