Chamberlain (0-1) at Sumner (1-0), 7:30
Three things to know
The Surging Stingrays
Sumner is a third-year program that has enjoyed tremendous success. In their first year in 2020, the Stingrays went 7-1 playing a hybrid junior varsity and varsity schedule. Last year, Sumner won a district title – and a playoff game – in their first year entering district play. The success has continued so far this season with victories over East Bay in the preseason and Bloomingdale in last week’s regular season opener.
Rebuilding mode
This has been a transition season for Chamberlain, which has gone through three coaches in less than a year. Joey Jaime was promoted two months ago from assistant to head coach. He takes over for Patrick Murphy, the former Sickles coach who left before coaching in an actual game. Last week, Jaime made his regular season debut with the program. Chamberlain played hard but wore down in a 39-0 loss to Durant.

Key matchup
Sumner quarterback Greg Smith III is an electrifying playmaker who already has offers from Syracuse and USF. Last week, the junior put on a show against Bloomingdale, finishing with 340 yards (258 passing, 82 rushing) and five touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) to lead the Stingrays to a 44-32 season-opening victory. The task for Chamberlain is trying to contain Smith’s elusiveness. Defenders such as Rashad Brown and Amarion Lock, hope to provide air-tight coverage in the secondary.
