Football: Former Jesuit quarterback Luke Knight now at Merrit Island

Luke Knight, who led Jesuit to an undefeated season and state title last season, is now the quarterback at Merritt Island, according to his father, Rick.

Earlier this week, Knight withdrew from Jesuit, which has first reported by SBLive’s Andy Villamarzo.

“All I will say in regards to Luke leaving Jesuit is that our family made a move across the state for employment reasons,” Rick Knight said.

Last season, Knight threw for 2,511 yards, 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions. In the state title game against Pensacola Pine Forest, Knight led the Tigers on the furious rally. Trailing 29-14 in the second half, Knight threw for three touchdowns, the last coming in the final minute for a wild 35-29 victory.

In the offseason, Will Griffin, who threw for more than 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns as an eighth grader at Northside Christian last season, decided to enroll at Jesuit.

Tigers coach Matt Thompson said before the season that Knight still was the starter, but that Griffin would see playing time in certain offensive packages. In two games this season, Knight threw for 339 yards and two touchdowns. Griffin, now the starter, has thrown for 144 yards and a touchdown on just six completions playing in a more limited role the first two games. The lone touchdown pass was an 85-yarder to Jarriett Buie in last week’s loss to Miami Columbus.

Knight still can play this season at Merritt Island because the family moved there. Thanks to his playoff pedigree, Knight has a chance to make an immediate impact with the Mustangs. In two games, Merritt Island has used three quarterbacks — Forrest Butler, Dylan Burk and Yaseen DeReese — who have combined to complete six of 23 passes with an interception.
