Football: Pasco County Monday night forecast — Oct. 3

Check it out

Cypress Creek (4-0) at Pasco (4-0), 7

The lone unbeatens in Class 3, District 7 in the Suburban Division square off. The host Pirates, winless a year ago, have been dominant during their perfect start, outscoring foes by a combined 140-66. But this will be their toughest challenge so far this season. The Coyotes also have overwhelmed opponents, outscoring them by a combined 130-31. Both teams are led by dynamic running backs – Cypress Creek’s Malachi Askin (526 yards, eight touchdowns) and Pasco’s Tayshaun Balmir (840 yards, 12 rushing touchdowns). The Coyotes have displayed more balance with Jack Niemann throwing for 762 yards and nine touchdowns in four games. The Pirates, meanwhile, have 291 passing yards.

Putnam’s pick: Pasco 24-21

Mitchell (3-2) at Land O’ Lakes (4-0), 7

This is the first time the teams have met since 2019. The Mustangs won that one 48-7. There is more at stake in the latest matchup. Mitchell, which has won six straight district titles, already has a win in Class 4, District 6 of the Suburban Division after routing Wiregrass Ranch 50-6 two weeks ago. The undefeated Gators, meanwhile, are playing their district opener. Under new coach Dan Goodspeed, Land O’ Lakes is off to a strong start, winning each of its first four games by double digits.  Still, the unblemished record has come against teams with a combined record of 5-13.

Putnam’s pick: Mitchell 21-16

Springstead (5-0) at Wiregrass Ranch (1-3), 7:30

The undefeated Eagles are playing their first Class 4, District game in the Suburban Division. This is a competitive district that includes another unbeaten, Land O’ Lakes, as well as six-time defending district champion Mitchell. A win would not only keep Springstead’s perfect record intact but also help the Eagles remain at the top of the standings. The host Bulls lost to Mitchell earlier this season and cannot afford to drop another district game. The key will be whether Wiregrass Ranch’s defense, which is allowing 29 points per game, can tighten things enough to slow down Springstead’s explosive offense, which is averaging 39 points per game.

Putnam’s pick: Springstead 28-20
