Revenge in rivalry

Clearwater Central Catholic had already knocked off rivals Berkeley Prep and Tampa Catholic this season.

But the victory over another nemesis, Jesuit, was perhaps the most rewarding.

The Marauders had lost the past three meetings against the defending state champions. They ended years of frustration in dramatic fashion.

Trailing 21-14 in the fourth quarter, CCC rallied with a touchdown but missed a potential tying extra point.

No matter.

The Marauders came up with a critical stop and drove into Tigers’ territory to set a field goal. Andy Jaffe nailed the kick for a 23-21 win.

Tornado turnaround

After starting 0-2, Clearwater has won three of its last four, the latest coming in a 9-6 against Pinellas Park that evened the Tornadoes’ record this season (3-3).

Defense is the big reason Clearwater has been able to get back on track. In the three wins, the Tornadoes have allowed a combined 21 points.

Pirates find a passer

Boca Ciega has lost quarterbacks to a torn ACL, a broken collarbone and sprained ankle this year.

Against Countryside, the Pirates turned to their fourth option, Jeremiah Dennard, an electrifying athlete who played primarily as a receiver and defensive back.

Dennard gave Boca Ciega’s offense it needed, finishing with 258 yards (207 rushing, 51 passing) and four touchdowns (three rushing, one passing). He also picked off a pass on defense in a 33-13 victory.

A pair of private schools remain perfect

Northside Christian (5-0) and Indian Rocks Christian (6-0) are the only two private school teams in the bay area that are still undefeated.

The Mustangs remained perfect with a 28-21 win over Seffner Christian. The Golden Eagles remained unbeaten with a 56-6 rout over Keswick Christian.

If the two programs can each win this week, that will set up a showdown on Oct. 21 between them to decide the Class 1, District 4 title that will also put their undefeated seasons on the line.

Barons breakthrough

St. Petersburg Catholic, which started 0-5, got its first win of the season in a 14-8 overtime thriller over Bradenton Saint Stephen’s.
