No. 3 Lemon Bay (13-9) at No. 1 Academy of the Holy Names (20-4), 7

Since the district tournament two weeks ago, the defending state champion Jaguars have won four straight matches, all via sweeps.

Academy of the Holy Names’ postseason domination helped the program turn things around after a late season slump in which the Jaguars lost three of five matches.

But those losses all came against quality competition, which was big in getting Academy of the Holy Names prepared for what it will face in the playoffs.

This is the second time the Jaguars have faced Lemon Bay. Last month, Academy of the Holy Names swept the Manta Rays in two sets at its annual tournament.

Lemon Bay overcame a rough nine-match stretch in which it went 2-7 to reach the final. In last week’s semifinals, the Manta Rays outlasted Robinson in five sets to extend their current win streak to four matches.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, cruised in the semifinals against Estero. Caroline Arnold (14 assists, three digs), Cassidy Smith (13 assists, five digs) and Lily Hayes (nine digs, six kills) were the stat leaders for Academy of the Holy Names.

Region semifinal scoreboard

Clearwater Central Catholic 3, Tampa Prep 0

Sarasota Cardinal Mooney 3, Calvary Christian 1

Tonight’s area region final matchup
No. 4 Sarasota Cardinal Mooney (18-9) at No. 3 Clearwater Central Catholic (18-7), 7

After sweeping Tampa Prep in the region semifinals, the Marauders were anticipating a rematch with rival Calvary Christian tonight.

That did not happen.

The Warriors, the defending state champions, lost in four sets in the semifinals to Sarasota Cardinal Mooney.

This is the first meeting of the season between Clearwater Central Catholic and the Cougars.

After starting the season 5-6, Cardinal Mooney has won 13 of its last 16 matches, including seven straight heading into tonight. The biggest victories in this late season sure were a sweep over Venice, ranked No. 1 in Class 7A by MaxPreps, and last week’s semifinal triumph over Calvary Christian.

The Marauders, ranked No. 4 in the class by MaxPreps, have some impressive victories, too. They rallied from a pair of 2-0 deficits to beat defending state semifinalist Academy of the Holy Names and defending state champion Plant in five set thrillers last month.

In last week’s semifinals, Josie Hensley (36 assists, 10 digs), Brooke Green (11 kills, seven digs), Lauren Cairo (11 digs, nine kills), Myah Typrowicz (17 digs), Taylor Bedinghaus (16 digs) and Aliyah Waldon (13 kills) all stood out for CCC.

Scoreboard

Keswick Christian 3, Marco Island Academy 1

Naples Seacrest Country Day 3, Tampa Bay HEAT 0

Tuesday’s area region final matchup
No. 2 Keswick Christian (22-6) at No. 1 Naples Seacrest Country Day (23-4), 7

This is the first time the Crusaders have faced Seacrest Country Day in the playoffs since a five-set loss in the 2019 region final.

Getting payback — and advancing to the state semifinals — will be a difficult challenge for Keswick Christian.

After all, the defending state champion Stingrays are ranked No. 1 in the class by MaxPreps and are undefeated (13-0) at home this season. Their four losses were all in tournaments, including two to out-of-state teams.

Still, the Crusaders have plenty of momentum. They enter with a 11-match win streak, and their four-set victory over Marco Island Academy in the region semifinals was the first time they had not swept an opponent in their last seven matches.

Hannah Jantomaso (35 assists, 10 digs), Robyn Cantwell (23 digs, nine kills), Sydney Melcher (11 digs, 10 kills and Nyla Fulvi (15 kills, six digs) led Keswick Christian in its semifinal win.
