Class 4
2022 FHSAA Football State Championships 4 M
Tonight’s area region quarterfinal matchup
Sumner (8-2) at Plant (8-2), 7
This is the second meeting between the schools. Last year, the Panthers won 23-15.
The Stingrays rebounded from that loss a year ago to win six straight games and clinch their first district title in 2021.
The third-year program followed that up with another playoff appearance this season.
Much like last season, Sumner has some momentum, winning four straight games to close out the regular season.
Plant has turned things around in the past two seasons, going 6-4 last year and clinching its first district title since 2018 this year.
After starting 0-2, the Panthers have won eight straight games, all by 17 or more points.
The big matchup will be if Plant’s defense, which has posted four shutouts during its current win streak, can contain Sumner’s Greg Smith III, a multidimensional force at quarterback who has more than 1,000 yards passing and 500 rushing this season.
