Football: Tonight’s Class 3 preview (Metro) — Nov. 14

Class 3M

2022 FHSAA Football State Championships 3 M

Tonight’s area region quarterfinal matchup
No. 6 Wharton (8-2) at No. 3 Oviedo (9-1), 7

The Wildcats, who made the region final last season, finished the regular season with eight wins, one more than they had last season. And their two losses this year came against defending state champion in the season opener and to defending state finalist Tampa Bay Tech.

Playing a tough schedule should serve Wharton well in a postseason bracket that is one of the toughest in the state.

The key to the Wildcats’ success starts up front on defense with line that can make life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. Wharton has recorded 65 sacks as a team, including a whopping 30 from Booker Pickett Jr.

The Lions have won seven straight games, all by eight or more points. Their lone loss was in overtime to Lake Mary in September.

Much like the Wildcats, Oviedo is led by a stellar defense. The Lions have recorded two shutouts and have allowed 11 points per game.
