Football: Class 1 region semifinal preview (Metro) — Nov. 17

Class 1M

2022 FHSAA Football State Championships 1 M

Friday’s area region quarterfinal matchups
No. 3 Carrollwood Day (5-3) at Northside Christian (8-1), 7

The Patriots are in the playoffs for the third straight season. They have a quality win against Calvary Christian earlier this season and their three losses (Madison County, Rockledge and Clearwater Central Catholic) were all to playoff-bound teams.

Carrollwood Day’s strength is at the line of scrimmage. The offensive line includes two Division I-A recruits, Clay Wedin (Auburn) and James Jenkins (Cincinnati). On defense, edge rusher Solomon Williams, a transfer from Seffner Christian, leads the team in sacks with 9.5.

The Mustangs had to make some adjustments after losing Will Griffin, now the starting quarterback at Jesuit. They have done well, relying on a balanced offense and opportunistic defense, to start this season 8-0 before losing the regular season finale to Orlando Christian Prep.

The biggest playmaker is Zuri Watson, who has more than 1,000 yards on offense (774 rushing, 310 receiving) and has picked off three passes on defense for Northside Christian.

No. 4 Indian Rocks Christian (9-1) at No. 1 Clearwater Central Catholic (9-1), 7:30

Golden Eagles coach Mark Buchanan, who is in his second stint with the program, has guided the team to its first playoff berth since 2017.

That was the final year of his first stint at Indian Rocks Christian. Buchanan stepped down and went through a three-year battle with cancer. Now cancer-free, Buchanan decided to return to coaching this year.

On offense, the Golden Eagles rely heavily on Anthony Harris, who leads the team in rushing yards (499) and receiving yards (198).

The Marauders, the top seed in the region, have won eight straight games, all by 14 or more points.

Defensively, CCC has been stellar, allowing more than 20 points in just three games. And the offense is starting to put up points at a dizzying pace, scoring 63 in each of the last two games.

Marauders quarterback Jershaun Newton, who has thrown for more than 1,000 yards this season, needs 66 more on the ground to reach 1,000 rushing on the year.
