Football: Class 2 region semifinal preview (Suburban) — Nov. 17

Class 2S

2022 FHSAA Football State Championships 2 S

Friday’s area region semifinal matchup
No. 4 Hudson (9-2) at No. 1 South Sumter (11-0), 7:30

The Cobras, who are in the playoffs for the third straight season, have reached the region semifinals for the first time since 2005.

They have plenty of momentum, too, Hudson is on a seven-game win streak — al by double digits.

On offense, Hudson has not missed a beat despite its leading passer and two of its top leading receivers all graduating.

Riley Blevens, in his first year as a full-time starter, has thrown for 2,255 yards and 28 touchdowns. AJ McFarlane has 840 yards and 12 touchdowns receiving. And the Cobras have a dynamic dual-threat in Logan Shawell, who has 1,376 yards on offense (1,046 rushing, 327 receiving) and 16 touchdowns (12 rushing, four receiving).

That production is a big reason the Cobras are averaging nearly 40 points per game and have scored 33 or more in each of the last seven games.

Still, getting to the next round will be challenging.

The Raiders, the top-ranked team in the region, are undefeated thanks to a stingy defense that has posted four shutouts and has allowed just 96 points all season.
