Calvary Christian was not trying to make a point in Friday’s Class 2 region semifinal against Berkeley Prep.
The Warriors were trying to make two.
Trailing 28-21 in overtime, Calvary Christian’s Sean Cuono scored to cut it to 28-27. .
That left the Warriors with a decision, and they didn’t go for the sure thing.
Rather than force another overtime with an extra point, Calvary Christian chose to gamble with a two-point conversion.
It worked.
Jacob Drackett threw to Toby Wroe for the conversion as the Warriors won 29-28.
Calvary Christian will host Lakewood in next week’s Class 2 region final in the Metro Division.
This is a rematch from a game the host Warriors won 42-10 two months ago.
Since that loss, the defending state finalist Buccaneers have won six straight. Their recent success was due in large part to a defense that allowed a combined 33 points during this recent win streak.
And for much of the first half, Berkeley Prep had the momentum, building a 14-0 lead.
Calvary Christian chipped away at the deficit. Sean Cuono ran for a touchdown and Drackett hit Joshua Robinson for another score to tie it at 14.
The Buccaneers never quit, scoring to take a 21-14 lead.
With a minute left in regulation, Cuono ran for a touchdown to force overtime.
Berkeley Prep went ahead again, setting up the dramatics for the Warriors with their gutsy call.
