Football: Class 4 region semifinal preview (Metro) — Nov. 18

Class 4M

2022 FHSAA Football State Championships 4 M

Tonight’s area region semifinal matchup
No. 4 Plant (9-2) at No. 1 East Lake (10-1), 7:30

This is the first time the teams have met since the 2011 region final that the Panthers won 28-21 in overtime.

In that game, the Eagles held a 21-14 lead with 3:31 left in regulation. A first down that would have helped kill the clock was wiped off with a holding penalty. Plant got the ball back, scored with 28 seconds left in regulation to tie it, then won in overtime. The Panthers went on to win the state title that year.

Plant, which won a district title for the first time since 2018, has won nine straight games. Last week, they kept that streak going by overcoming a 20-point deficit to beat Sumner 37-34 in the region quarterfinals.

That comeback gave the Panthers a much-needed test considering they had won their previous eight games by 17 or more points.

East Lake also has been on a roll, winning 10 straight games. all by double digits. A big reason for the Eagles current streak is a run game that includes two 1,000-yard rushers, Luke Yoder (1,388) and Caleb Coburn (1,029), which has helped the offense average 44 points per game.
