Class 2M
Lakewood (8-4) at Calvary Christian (10-2), 7
Outlook
This is the first time these teams have played.
The visiting Spartans are trying to reach the state semifinals for the second straight season.
To prepare for the run, Lakewood put together a challenging schedule that included scheduled trips to Delray Beach Atlantic and Miami Southridge and a matchup against powerhouse Lakeland in the regular season.
The Spartans struggled at times, going 6-4, their worst regular season record since 2018. But all those challenging contests are now paying off.
Last week, Lakewood rallied from a fourth quarter deficit to beat top seed Tampa Catholic 44-41 to exact revenge for a double overtime loss to the Crusaders two years ago.
The Spartans have scored more than 40 points in each of their first two playoff games.
Anthony Colandrea, a Virginia commit, has thrown for a combined 512 yards and eight touchdowns in the last two games. Aviyon Mack-Smith has eight catches for 199 yards and four touchdowns during that span and returned a punt for a pivotal score against Tampa Catholic last week.
The host Warriors are in the third round of the playoffs for the first time.
Last week, Calvary Christian played Berkeley Prep for the second time this season. The rematch was more competitive than the first meeting, a 42-10 Warriors win in September.
This time, Calvary Christian had to rally from a 14-0 halftime deficit to force a tie at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Warriors scored to make it 28-27, then were successful on a two-point conversion to win 29-28.
Sean Cuono has been instrumental in Calvary Christian’s first two playoff wins, rushing for a combined 226 yards and five touchdowns.
