Football: Gaither’s Eugene Wilson III wins Guy Toph Award — Jan. 27

Gaither’s Eugene Wilson III, considered one of the area’s leading receiving threats, won the Guy Toph Award, presented annually to the top player in Hillsborough County.

Wilson III, a Florida signee, is rated as the nation’s 21st-best receiver in the 2023 class according to 247 Sports. The four-star recruit picked the Gators over offers from more than 20 other prominent programs, including Alabama and Georgia.

After dealing with an injury that sidelined him for more than a month, Wilson III went on a tear upon his return. In a five-week stretch (Oct. 21-Nov. 18), Wilson III finished with 32 catches for 640 yards and nine touchdowns.

He was stellar on defense, too, picking off a combined four passes in that span and returning one for a touchdown.

That helped the Cowboys qualify for the playoffs with an at-large bid and advance to the Class 4 region semifinals in the Metro Division.

Wilson III becomes the third player from Gaither to win the award, joining Terry Jordan (1987) and Lydell Ross (2000).
